Mattel is relaunching Barney the dinosaur with a new animated series and line of toys and clothes but he's back with a new look and some fans are mad about it.

"Barney & Friends" debuted in 1992, born out of the minds of Sheryl Leach, Kathy Parker and Dennis DeShazer. The show notably launched the careers of such luminaries as Demi Lovato and Selena Gomez.

She joined Kathy Parker and television producer Dennis DeShazer to develop Barney and the Backyard Gang and Barney & Friends.

'Barney & Friends' voice actor Bob West revealed that he received death threats for playing the famous purple dinosaur.

The obsession over Barney and all his friends was inescapable. Barney & Friends premiered on PBS in 1988 and the live-action show became must-see TV among the nursery school set.

The series will feature Barney and friends with adventures "centered on love, community and encouragement," Mattel said in a news release.
