A vegetation fire near El Dorado Hills broke out on Labor Day, quickly growing in size and prompting evacuations, officials said.

A 72-year-old woman died in a fire on the 19th floor of an East Harlem high-rise after firefighters had to traverse the stairs because elevators were not working, according to the fire department. The FDNY said there was a report of a fire breaking out at the building on East 122nd Street between Second and Third avenues around 7 p.

The fire at the two-story home on Rutland Road was reported at 12:11 a.m. Schmitt said in an email that about 60 firefighters from 10 Nassau departments — Hempstead, South Hempstead, Baldwin, Garden City, Elmont, Freeport, Rockville Centre, Roosevelt, Uniondale and Westbury — responded, bringing the fire under control by about 12:45 a.m.
