New York confirms a measles case in an unvaccinated Suffolk County child, prompting health warnings and calls for vaccinations amidst concerns of spread.

A highly contagious illness that can cause pneumonia, swelling of the brain, miscarriage, and even death, has now been confirmed outside of New York City.

The Suffolk County Health Department reported its first confirmed case of the measles. A child under 5 years old who lives in Suffolk County is said to be the third case statewide.

Anyone who feels they may have been exposed should consult with their doctor or pediatrician or contact their local health department.
